St John’s Island

A Quarantine Island in the 19th Century

In the late 1800s, when Singapore was a busy trading port, ships arriving from overseas were required to stop at St John’s Island. It served as a quarantine station for immigrants and sailors suspected of carrying infectious diseases such as cholera. Thousands of new arrivals to Singapore first set foot here before entering the mainland — making the island one of the earliest “gateways” to the country.
